How do contractors use limited companies?
You're ready to start working for yourself as a contractor, and you've chosen the most tax-efficient format for it which is the limited company. What do you do next?
Well, it's all fairly simple, and most of it can be handled by the accountant you choose to help manage your company.
The six main steps to getting started:
- Choose an accountant
- Set up the company
- Arrange a bank account
- Choose an online accounting system
- Register for VAT
- Start invoicing your clients!
Many contractors choose to work for clients using their own limited companies, sometimes referred to by the taxman as ‘personal service companies’. They do so for many reasons, often because clients and recruitment agencies won’t hire the self-employed, which leaves contractors who are not caught within IR35 with few choices.
How do you choose a good accountant?
Once you have decided that the best trading option for the current stage of your contracting career is a limited company, then choosing a specialist contractor accountant is the next step.
It is also a hugely important one, as a good accountant can save you many times your accounting fees by efficiently managing your tax affairs.
The most important aspect to understand is that you need a specialist accountant who deals with contractors, rather than a high street accountant. There are many to choose from, with all varying degrees of offerings and services. Just remember, you get what you pay for.
Try to pick an accountant who has fully embraced the latest technologies and systems, to ensure you are getting best value for money.
All the best ones will provide a cloud based accounting solution, which will save you considerable time and money.
